A bride who thought she was starting a dream life in Gambia was found hanged after being told her husband was infertile.

A coroner yesterday said the truth of 27-year-old Simone’s death may never be known because police in Africa would not help him.

Simone, from Leyland, Lancs, moved to Gambia after meeting Mohammed, 29, on holiday and they married in a Valentine’s Day beach ceremony in 2010.

Her mother Janice Lally told the Preston inquest the couple argued after it emerged he was infertile.

“He had been aggressive – it came back he couldn’t have children, unless he gave up smoking weed, cigarettes and alcohol.”

Simone, who sounded “happy and normal” on the evening she died at the couple’s home in the capital Banjul, had once said she feared Mohammed might break her legs.

Coroner Simon Jones said the mystery surrounding her death in August 2011 might never be solved because of the lack of help by Gambian police.

Recording an open verdict, he said: “I have had no response to the letters I have written to the Gambian authorities.”
