‘120 dead’ in latest Egypt clashes

UP to 120 supporters of Egypt’s ousted president Mohamed Morsi were last night claimed to have been shot dead by security forces

The deaths came early yesterday at a sit-in near a mosque in east Cairo, where thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters have camped since Morsi was deposed on July 3.

Men in helmets and black police fatigues fired on crowds before dawn.

The death toll was put at 120 by the Brotherhood with 4,500 injured.

But the country’s interior minister accused the Brotherhood of exaggerating the toll for political ends.

He said only 21 people had died and denied police opened fire. Meanwhile, Morsi, 61, is heading to a jail cell alongside former leader Hosni Mubarak, 85.

In Libya, more than 1,000 detainees escaped from a prison near the eastern city of Benghazi, as protesters stormed the offices of political parties in Libya’s main cities.
